Sacrament

Elder Laws: "Is This not the Reality of God?"
Feed the missionaries
The faster we learn, the greater our faith
Space is evidence of God - only evidence we have are the telescopes and pictures they take
The greatest gift of God was His son, Jesus Christ
3 Nephi 11 - the Savior visits the Nephites
Apostles and Prophets
Ephesians – the foundation of Christ’s church
The apostles know the Voice
Joseph Smith
Emma Smith – was a witness of Joseph
Hyrum Smith – was willing to die for his brother
The Book of Mormon
Why would a man die for a book?
Why would he leave his family?
Why would he make his wife a widow?
You are right where you need to be
Your future is as bright as your faith
The story of the Savior and the man by the cliff: the Savior is standing on the very edge of a cliff. A man walks up, but won’t go near the edge. The Savior calls, “Come to me” offering his hand. The man shakes his head and backs further away. The Savior calls a second time, offering his hand, “Come to me.” The man looks up, but can’t bring himself to go near the edge. The Savior calls the third, final time, “Come to me,” with his hand outstretched. The man closes his eyes and slowly walks forward. When he reaches the edge of the cliff he opens his eyes. The Savior is no longer in front of him. Looking back he sees Christ behind him. The Savior gently pushes him in the back off the cliff; and he flies.
All we need to do is trust in the Lord and we can soar to any height
Exert all effort
Book of John – ‘Ye are my friends’
Marry in the temple

Laurel Clarke - Elder Lynn G. Robbins talk from October 2014 General Conference, "Which Way Do You Face?"
Excitement to go and serve – going to Mexico, Cancun
“What are you most scared of for your mission?”
     - being sick
     - being rejected
The good news is better than a small rejection
Matthew 22:37-39
“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
“This is the first and great commandment.
“And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”
“Fear ye not the reproach of men.” – Isaiah
Don’t be afraid of the finger of scorn
Always share your testimony – forget the scorn
If the prophets face scorn, we will too
How will we face the scorn – to stay strong?
Joshua 1:9
“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid; neither be thou dismayed; for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
If you’re feeling alone – turn to the scriptures
True badge of courageis overcoming man
“I fear not what man can do, for pure love casteth out all fear.”
Captain Moroni – Alma 60:23-36
V. 36, “I seek not for power, but to pull it down. I seek not for honor of the world, but for the glory of my God, and the freedom and welfare of my country.”
“The only perfect being was fearless…”

Brother Coburn -
Romans
Many aspects of safety
SA - situational awareness'
We don’t want to lose our SA
We came here to get a body, gain faith, gain knowledge
Living here we have to learn by certain commandments
Eternal Life = God’s life; living in the family unit
Abraham 3:25
“And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them”
There are ordinances we have to take care of: baptism, eternal marriage, etc.
We get these because of the priesthood
Have a family night about the priesthood
Keys of the priesthood – Bishop authorizes who to perform ordinances (at ward level)
   - they keep things in order
Priesthood keys are what God has given
Keys are very important
Elijah had the keys of sealing as well as others
The power of the priesthood
    - in which man can act for his family
Jesus Christ has all the keys of the priesthood
We have the keys that are necessary for this dispensation
Authority is so we can keep that order
Given authority to preach the gospel
Is your spouse your friend?

Gospel Doctrine

Isaiah
22:7 What’s important to you? We have to be able to deal with our problems
“And it shall come to pass, that thy choicest valleys shall be full of chariots, and the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.”
What are our choicest valleys?
22:21 David was of the house of Judah
“And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.”
22: 22-25 – speaking of Christ as the nail
“And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
“And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father’s house.
“And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father’s house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons.
“In that day, saith of LORD of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath spoken it.”
Helaman 5:12 – have a sure foundation
“And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty wings, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fail.”
Christ – the second coming – the Atonement = three main topic discussed in the scriptures
Do the best that we can
What do you do to help you stay on the path?
People you respect – want to be like them
Review – consistently – the conference talks until the next conference
Find a place where you can capture your thoughts
23:18 Holiness to the Lord
“And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the LORD: it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be for them that dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.”
26:10
“Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.”
1 Corinthians 15:22
“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
We are given direction and instruction to better our lives
28:10 – line upon line, precept upon precept – we learn slowly
“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.”
We want to have the desire to learn
The Lord knows when we’re ready to learn something new
Bridle – controls the horse
30:28 – what makes us go away from Christ that we need to fix in our lives?
“And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the next, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity; and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err.”
Christ can help us overcome our addictions

Relief Society

We all progress differently
Have you done anything to help others
A small little thing can make BIG difference
Moroni 7:47 – charity to others is the greatest act we can do
“But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.”
Charity works with the Holy Ghost
It’s all in the timing
Pay attention – being coupled with the spirit paves the way
If the spirit is not there you won’t accomplish much
Teaching of the Prophets, Joseph Fielding Smith, Chapter 20, Page 253
P. 255 section 2
John 13:33-34
“Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
The first and second great commandments
Do things out of love – don’t strive to be perfect
Be around people who love everybody – they glow
Love and help one another
When you feel loved, you feel better about yourself
It’s amazing how love and charity can improve a person’s day
Don’t jump on people – we have to let it go
If you don’t have the fault, you don’t worry about anyone else having it too
‘Do your best, forget the rest’
Lose yourself of those loose, petty, temporal things
Stop carrying around all the rocks
Worry about your own weakness, not others
Think about what you do – not what others do
Say positive things about others – be honest
Talk about what you need to improve on
Know when to say things – and when not to
Have a self evaluation each weel – find out what you need to do to improve yourself
Mission patterns are what we should do with family, spouses and in everyday life

“Have I Done Any Good” lyrics
“Have I done any good in the world today?
Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?
If not, I have failed indeed.
Has anyone’s burden been lighter today
Because I was willing to share?
Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?
When they needed my help was I there?

Then wake up and do something more
Than dream of your mansion above.
Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,
A blessing of duty and love.

There are chances for work all around just now,
     Opportunities right in our way.
Do not let them pass by, saying,
      “Sometime I’ll try,”
But go and do something today.
     ‘Tis noble of man to work and to give;
     Love’s labor has merit alone.
Only he who does something helps others to live.
To God each good work will be known.

Then wake up and do something more
Than dream of your mansion above.
Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,
A blessing of duty and love.”
~Text and music: Will L. Thompson, 1847-1909, alt.

Have an endless cycle of good deeds
The cycle starts and ends with love
Christ was sent to set a perfect example
We can be the best, and help others become the best

Hey! I'm back! Starting today I hope to post a few days worth of notes. The heading will be the day of the notes taken. I'm also adding in all the scriptures, some links to talks and the lyrics to the music! These are all the things I've written down during church. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to either post here or e-mail me. :)

Slight Haitus

So. My laptop died for 2 weeks and I haven't been able to type notes.

Staring now (well, today-ish) I'm going to focus on typing up my journals (I have about six right now). From there I'll occasionally post an entry of notes for you to read through and comment on.

Comments are welcomed! Let's discuss something - especially if you have a question!

I hope your Sunday was as relaxful as mine was. It was rather peaceful - considering it went from being chilly to hot!

1 Nephi 19 – 2 Nephi 3
19:18
18 And I, Nephi, have written these things unto my people, that perhaps I might persuade them that they would aremember the Lord their Redeemer.
Have the plates so that they could remember the Lord their redeemer
We remember the Lord when we gather together to read the scriptures
We learn better by hearing stories and example rather than having it given to us directly
Scriptures show us how to live the principles
Scripture stories teach us better
Much like the parables – they were taught for people to understand better
19:23
23 And I did read many things unto them which were written in the abooks of Moses; but that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet bIsaiah; for I did cliken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our dprofit and learning.
What are some ways we can liken the scriptures to ourselves?
Try and put yourself in the position – how would you react, what would you feel?
When we’re put out of our comfort zone that is when we improve and respond as we truly are

If you’re not paddling, you’re going backwards – we have to be constantly moving
Service can help you get out of your comfort zone
    Going on a mission
    Trying something new
    Going to school
    Marriage
    Moving out

“You’ll never learn if you never leave the nest”
    Helping with missionary work
    Be ready to answer questions

“Read the scripture as if the Lord were speaking to us in a personal manner.”

P. 43 Manuel – questions
What significance does this particular event or principle have for me today?

Isaish is hard for anyone to understand – we have to try

1 Nephi 20:10
10 For, behold, I have refined thee, I have chosen thee in the furnace of aaffliction.

A lot of people fall when they meet a trial
EX: addictions, drugs, illnesses, financial, school, death

Refined – place metal through fire, then beat out the impurities

Furnace of affliction – the fire burns off all the impurities and the pure stuff sinks to the bottom

We get many chances if we don’t make it through the trial the first time

We have a God of many chances – he doesn’t give up on us

P. 45 – Elder Hales
‘Constant, intense pain is a great consecrating purifier that humbles us and draws us closer to God’s Spirit.’
“What dost Thou want me to learn from these experiences?”
‘[The] purifying process of testing [is] to be endured in the Lord’s time and in the Lord’s own way.’

Most of our trials were chosen for us – which is comforting
       – some we inflict on ourselves

Your eyes change when you’re in pain

1 Nephi 19:23

1 Nephi 21: 6-13 – Symbls that represent the Savior’s love for us
And he said: It is a light thing that thou shouldst be my servant to raise up the atribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel. I will also give thee for a blight to the cGentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the ends of the earth.
Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nations abhorreth, to servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful.
 Thus saith the Lord: In an acceptable time have I heard thee, O isles of the sea, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee amy servant for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;
That thou mayest say to the aprisoners: Go forth; to them that sit in bdarkness: Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their cpastures shall be in all high places.
10 They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor the sun smite them; for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.
11 And I will make all my mountains a way, and my ahighwaysshall be exalted.
12 And then, O house of Israel, behold, athese shall come from far; and lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.
13 aSing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; for the feet of those who are in the east shall be established; and bbreak forth into singing, O mountains; for they shall be smitten no more; for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon hiscafflicted.

    - Give thee for a light
    - Mercy upon his afflicted
    -

V. 14-17
14 But, behold, Zion hath said: The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me—but he will show that he hath not.
15 For can a awoman forget her sucking child, that she should not have bcompassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may cforget, yet will I not forget thee, O house of Israel.
16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the apalms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.
17 Thy children shall make haste against thy destroyers; and they that made thee awaste shall go forth of thee.

    - we are in graven upon the palms of his hands

22: 1-2 How can we understand the words of Isais? By the voice of the spirit

22:3 should these propiechies be considered temporal or spiritual? Both

22: ? Where will Israel be scattered? All over

22: 5 Why will Israel be scattered? They harden their hearts against the Holy one of Israels

22: 6-8, 12 What does he mean when he prophesizes that Israel will someday be nursed by the Gentiles? ‘will bring them out of captivity, and they shall be gathered together’

22:14 what will happen to those who fight against Israel? ‘All that fight against Zion [Israel] shall be destroyed’

22: 13, 16 How will the great and abominable church be destroyed? ‘They shall war among themselves and suffer the wrath of God’

The Great and abominable church is all others

22:17 How will the Lord ensure that the righteous do not parish because of the wicked? ‘He will preserve the righteous by His power,  … even unto the destruction of their enemies’

22:20-21 Who is the prophet like unto Moses who would be raised up by the Lord? ‘The Holy One of Israel’

22:24-26 How will Satan be bound during the millennial reign of Jesus Christ? ‘Because of the righteousness of His people, Satan has no power … and the Holy One of Israel reigneth’
“When Satan is bound in a single home, the millennium has begun in that home” (Teaching of Spencer W.
Kimball, 172

Chapter 7

2 Nephi 1

Book “1776”

Book “The 7 or 8 miracles that saved America”

Book “Bulletproof Washington”

The American Revolution

2 Nephi 2
The Creation, The Fall, The Atonement

God plans everything ahead of time

Why was the Fall necessary for the Plan?
     We wouldn’t be here
We had to know good from evil
To multiply and replenish the earth

There was one plan presented – not two – and an alternate proposal

Lucifer and Michael (separate sides)

Jehova – unchanging

The Fall was good

After the Fall came the Atonement
       The problem solver for everything

The Fall – the 2/3ds vrs the 1/3

Page 51 – underlined Atonement

What do we to do to take full advantage of the atonement?
      It is INFINITE
“I came not into the world to condemn man, but to save it” – scripture John 3:16 – 17

Things to act and things to be acted upon

2 Nephi 2: 26-27 – act yourself

Don’t let people make decisions for you

If you’re just sitting in the water, the water is acting for you

Christ is there with you every step of the way when things get hard

When we’re in the depths of despair the Lord comes and carries you
‘Eat; The journey is too hard for you,’

We are to act, not just be acted upon

We have the power to act and to choose on how to react to specific situations

Be grateful for people when they teach you

People can’t make us feel a certain way – it’s up to us to choose what we feel

No one can make you anything – angry, offended, sad – you choose to be those things

You can choose what to do with the emotion

You can choose how you deal with things

Acted upon usually have negative outcomes – you have to act to have an happy outcome

How can you be someone who acts, instead of being acted upon?
    ‘What would Jesus do?’
    Get out of yourself
Try and get out and help others
Make decisions before you get into situation

Find something good about everybody around you

Try and be more like the Savior

August 13, 2011 Saturday

Single Adult Conference “Overcoming Adversity”

First Workshop – Sister Weisler
Holy Habits and Righteous Routines and the Doctrine of Becoming
Become good spouses and good parents
Family comes first, career’s come second
The Savior and the Adversary both know what we can do
 - The Poster Principle
Be aware – do not judge – discern what is best for us
Is “your way” really the right way?
    See: Mosiah 14:6 – sheep
John 14:6 – by the Lord
             Isaiah 55:8-9 – thoughts
Haggai 1:5 – consider your ways
Consider: hearken: listen, obey
We are not just hearers of the word, but doers
3 Main Points:
  1) Use time wisely
  2) Stay Clean and Pure
  3) Trust Him
The Lord can make a lot more of our lives than we can
“Most people miss the real significance of what they might experience from and contribute to this life not because they are bad people or doing bad things, but because they have become distracted from doing the most important things.”
There are a lot of things that we do during the week
“Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is an even nobler art of leaving things undone.” – Uchtdorf
Things that matter: Temple, Family Night, Prayer, Visiting Teaching (Home Teaching), Scripture Study
Put things that matter most in first, then worry about everything else
Do the essential things first – all other things will follow
“It is the small changed made habitually that make the difference” President Eyring
Make a weekly schedule of what needs to be done and post it where you can see it
Add a Temple trip in as often as you can: weekly, monthly, or daily
1960 – Monday night declared Family Night
Realize that you are in charge of your life
Get a grip on how you spend your time
Know how to organize your thoughts and plan your days
Decide what you want to do, set yourself up, all else will fall into place – everything else will go around that
You can tell people “No”
You do not need to explain, “I have a previous commitment”
Journal writing is important
 - “The weakest ink is better than the greatest memory”
Take an hour on Sunday to go back through the week in detail
Let the internet become your reward (or the “fun” cites)
“We move towards and become that which we consistently think about and believe.”
There are many things to do besides watch TV
Walk away from things of the world
2) Stay Clean and Pure – look away from unwholesome things
Doctrine and Covenants 121:45 Let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly
Be who the Lord wants us to be
Have you ever prayed for your future spouse?
Pray that you will be worthy of them and they be worthy of you
You will meet at the right time and place
The Lord wants us to succeed
Take the good and the bad into the next generation
Ask, “How do we show we love them?” (The Lord and Christ)
John 14:15

Second Workshop – Brother Johnson
My Anchor in Adversity
The Kite
      The kite is . . . us
How critical is the air to flying kites?
            What does is represent?    Adversity
Adversity can raise us up – not always, but sometimes
So why Adversity?
Now . . . one of the mysteries
 - one of the greatest secrets ever sought after . . .
 - never found by 99.99% of world
                      The Plan of Salvation
2 Nephi 2:11
Where does adversity come from? Friends, enemies, family, self-inflicted, life
At some time your body will be against you
What is the most gut wrenching adversity experience you’ve ever had?
    (Self-question)
Write down some challenges you may have faced
All a matter of perspective
What have been your greatest Adversities?
      Would you trade?
People’s adversities are different from others. We cannot judge one person, or anyone based on our own trials
Looking at other’s adversities puts our own into perspective sometimes
“Purified by Fire”, President James E. Faust
“Here, then, is a great truth . . . seek to do right and be faithful . . .” (2nd paragraph)
“The thorns . . . perfection process”
We want our lives to become soft clay in the master’s hands
How can we be prepared to handle adversity?
     - Holy Ghost, comforter
     - Good attitude
     - Faith
Stress is what you feel when you put the things of the world before God. Peace is what you feel when you put the Lord before the world. – Anonymous
“I don’t want to frighten you . . . part of our belief”, Ballard
Upon What Are You Anchored?
What is our anchor? Our Testimony of the Atonement
Will your anchor leave you?
If you sever the anchor, the anchor remains, but the Testimony leaves
You must make that anchor strong
James 1:5-6
Helaman 5:12
Build your Testimony upon the Rock of the Savior
3 Nephi 14:25
Alma 26:6-7 – in the hands of the Lord
Elder Joseph B. Worthlin “Our Father in Heaven does . . . challenges . . . . that kind of . . . our own [works] . . . us ingenuity . . . rest to the Lord.”
Doctrine and Covenants 122:7-9
“. . . know thou . . . God shall be with you forever and ever”

Third Workshop – Brother Weisler
Diamonds, Dragons and Dipsticks
How desires, determination and doctrine make the difference
“Charlotte’s Web” movie – most influential movie
“12 Angry Men” – part of Top 5
“Groundhog Day” – part of Top 5
Concession at movie theater = most painful experience at movies
We have a choice to take what we’re handed and make it better
Make an effort
Are you excited about the New Year?
    Have a good outlook
Be ready for a Great Year!
    Psych yourself up
We get in ruts and keep ourselves there
Don’t beat yourself up all the time
Words are power
The Word = Jesus Christ
The words we speak have an influence on the spirit of the room
“Our lives follow our language”
Words change the way we see things
Sarcasm is not attractive – has to do with wild dogs, originally
Eliminate sarcasm
Cynicism is not beautiful
Innuendo is to be avoided
Fill that space with good words and thoughts
“My year will get better as I do”
Do you have an awareness that what you say, or what people say to you, has either a good (positive) or bad (negative) effect on you
We can’t get better until we overcome adversity
 - more confidence = overcoming adversity
How can your job prospects get better if you don’t
Don’t give in and don’t give up
Let today change you
Don’t just go through the motions
There are a thousand distractions and 1 Holy Ghost
We know challenges can be overcome
We must face adversity head on
Reach your potential

3 Principles of Anchorage

   2) Principle of Connectivity – must be properly connected to anchor
   3) Principle of Solidity – must be secured to a solid foundation
Charts are vital to good anchoring – a skilled mariner would not choose to anchor without them
A skilled child of heaven would not anchor without them
Adversity – there to accomplish the Lord’s own purpose in our life
External – challenged that happen to us
Internal – challenges that happen within us
